Harley owners gather to benefit Hospice Posted: 18 Feb 2011 02:50 PM PST The Harley Owners Group will stage its annual bike show at Holly Hill Mall on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 19 and 20. The show is held each year to benefit the Hospice League of Alamance-Caswell, and over the past 17 years, the event has raised thousands of dollars that are used for the operations of the Hospice Home on Chapel Hill Road. The Harley Davidson owners will have their bikes on display at the mall both days in a dual competition. The first competition is a vote by the public for their favorite bike in the show. There will be a bucket by each bike, and visitors at the show can vote for their favorite by putting money in the bucket. The bike generating the most money is the winner. In the second competition, bikes will be judged, and trophies will be awarded for Best in Show and several other categories. But the real winners in the event are those who need the services of Hospice in this area, and especially those who use the Hospice Home in their last days. This event raised more than $15,000 last year and the HOGs hope to top that this year. Hospice has served the Alamance-Caswell County area since the 1980s, and the home on Chapel Hill Road was opened April 11, 1994. Since that time, more than 3,200 terminally ill patients have been served there in their last days. There is now a 16-bed facility following a recent expansion program that added four beds in 2010. Within four hours of the opening of those beds, they were filled, and there continues to be a wait list. Six additional beds are to be added this year. All funds raised by the HOG bike show go directly to operations of the home, as is the case with all other events sponsored by the Hospice League.
