Chance to get a handle on Harley 'experience'

Bobtail rear fender, raked front forks, a horseshoe oil tank and ape-hanger handlebars.

Not familiar with any of the lingo?

Well, after tomorrow, you could be.

A truckload of new model demonstration Harley-Davidsons will arrive in Wollongong this weekend as part of the national Metal Mayhem tour.

Now in its third year, the tour is pitched at enthusiasts who've never ridden one of the iconic bikes, but have always wanted to.

Sixteen of the machines will be available for testing at Fraser Motorcycles in Fairy Meadow tomorrow, from 9.30am to 3pm.

The Mercury threw a leg over a 2011 FXST Softail Standard earlier this week and it was quite an empowering experience.

The 1584cc engine pulled like a tractor, the ABS brakes were instant and reassuring, the superfluous add-ons like blinkers which automatically shut-off were nice, too.

But it was the complete "James Dean" experience which stood out most.

Fraser Motorcycles branch manager Mitchell Clark said first-time riders nearly always came back with a smile on their face.

"People who haven't ridden a Harley-Davidson should definitely come along and get a taste of what the experience is all about," he said.

"I think a lot of it comes back to the brand; Harley-Davidson is a brand recognised by people around the world and they can familiarise with it."

Bookings for the event are advised, but Mr Clark said people could also show up on the day.

To book your place, call Fraser Motorcycles on 4283 0800. Free test rides will be available, but the event is weather permitting.
